Expressive Sound | Intro to Cantabile

Have you ever wondered how to make a melody sound more expressive on the piano?

When you come across lyrical passages in your music, one of the most important ways to bring them to life is through a cantabile approach. This Italian term means “in a singing style”—playing in a way that imitates the human voice.

With this approach, try using the pads of your fingers rather than the tips. While fingertips are essential for clarity in fast passagework, the pads help create a richer, more rounded tone needed for expressive melodies.

Equally important is involving the arm in your playing. Rather than striking the keys with just your fingers, let your arm support the sound by allowing its weight to sink into the key. This produces a deeper, more resonant sound without harshness.

We can summarise this into a simple three-step process:

1. Prepare – Begin your arm motion before you play the note.

2. Sink into the key – Allow the weight of your arm to support the finger as it presses all the way to the very bottom of the key.

3. Follow through – Continue the motion even after the moment of sound.

If it helps, think of a tennis swing. A player doesn’t stop when the racket hits the ball—they follow through, finishing the swing to guide the ball across the court. Cantabile works in a similar way: the arm motion continues beyond the moment of contact.

With consistent attention to touch and the use of your arm, you can effectively transform the sound of expressive passages.
